A look back in time

History of the Art and Craft Festival.

The concept of conducting an Arts Festival for fund raising purposes at the school was first prompted at the monthly meeting of the School P & C Association held on Tuesday 20th April 1971.

Mrs Anita Robertson, a member of the P&C Executive committee suggested that 'a pottery-making demonstration be held at the annual school fete and that a general Art and Craft Exhibition be conducted at the school during the year at a date to be fixed. Anita was joined by Jacqui Van Honste and the First Festival was held in July 1971.

The President of the PC in 1971 was Ron Hilliard, Secretary was Allen McKillop and Treasurer Geoffrey Wagg.

Mrs Barbara Perry questioned the parking facilities (Still a bug bear these days), and suggested the Oyster Bay scouts be engaged to direct traffic to the playgrounds.

And so began the history of parent participation in this annual event, a tradition which has carried on for the past 40 years, an involvement of committee members, parents and staff expending time and effort for the benefit of the school in particular and the students in general. (extract from Allen McKillops report in the schools 50th Anniversary book)

A note from the 1988 Commitee

They sounded like a fun bunch.... Just like todays commitee!
All are welcome to join in the fun of our next meeting.

Some Now and Then Observations

Security
Then - The local Oyster Bay Scouts slept at the school over the weekend.
Now - We employee a security firm to make sure the school site is protected over the weekend.

Cash Handling
Then - Parents accompanied CBA manager of Jannali branch to the bank each night to safely deposit the takings.
Now - Lets just say with EFTPOS it is much more secure!

Profit
Then - In 1971 the profit to the school after expenses was $395.
Now - In 2009 the profit to the school after expenses was in excess of $50,000.
